Special Programs
Early Decision Programs
Early Decision Programs (EDP) are offered by the following medical schools:
- Texas Tech University HSC School of Medicine - AAMC Early Decision Program
- TTUHSC SOM only considers and accepts Texas residents for this program.
- University of North Texas HSC-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine
- UTRGV School of Medicine Early Decision Program
- RGV EDP only considers and accepts residents of the Rio Grande Valley for this program. Please review program information on their website for more information.
Why apply through an Early Decision Program?
By applying for early decision you can greatly reduce the high financial and psychological costs of applying to and interviewing at multiple schools.
It should be emphasized that only applicants with an excellent chance of admission should apply through one of the EDP's since only a small portion of the first-year class is admitted through this program. Acceptance as part of EDP is competitive as part of the holistic review of each application.
EDP program provides:
- An interview in August or September to selected applicants.
- Prompt admission decision from the school - no later than October 1.
- The opportunity to apply to other TMDSAS participating schools, without having to submit an additional application, if not accepted as an EDP candidate.
EDP Applicant Requirements:
The rules of a formal Early Decision Program stipulate that an applicant cannot apply to ANY OTHER medical school in the U.S. until he or she receives the EDP decision.
All EDP applicants are required to do the following:
- Indicate in the [Select Schools] section that they are applying through one of the restricted Early Decision Programs.
- Submit the TMDSAS application by August 1st.
- If documents regarding your Texas residency are prompted by the application, please be proactive in providing these to expedite processing.
- Submit any required secondary applications by August 1st.
- Submit MCAT scores, all required transcripts, and letters of evaluation to TMDSAS
by August 15th.
- Make sure you select the MCAT test date that provides a score by this deadline. It takes TMDSAS up to 36 hrs to receive your score and make it available to the schools.
- Attend the selected school if offered acceptance through the Early Decision Program.
An applicant who is offered admission is required to attend the medical school. Applicants must obtain a formal release from the school they applied to in order to be eligible to apply to other schools.
Not Accepted through EDP?
If not accepted as an EDP candidate, the applicant is eligible to apply to other schools as soon as the formal notification letter is received from the school.
To apply to other TMDSAS schools for regular admission consideration, you must send an internal message system within the application by the application deadline, listing all schools you would like added to your application.
EnMed at Texas A&M University College of Medicine
EnMed is Texas A&M University's innovative Engineering Medicine school option, developed in a partnership among the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, and Houston Methodist Hospital, to educate a new kind of physician who will create transformational technology for health care.
Part of Texas A&M's College of Medicine's MD program and the College of Engineering, EnMed is a fully-integrated educational and research medical school curriculum with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.
For complete information on the program, visit the Texas A&M University College of Medicine website.
Medicine and Engineering at Texas Tech HSC School of Medicine
There is no greater engineering challenge than to improve human health. You may have heard the saying: "If you want to go fast, go alone but if you want to go far, go together." Together the integration of Medicine and Engineering can take healthcare farther. We aim to fundamentally change how we see, learn, innovate, implement and carryout the practice of medicine and the healing of people.
Through this unique partnership our goal is to realize the impact of engineering on medicine in the same way we have seen it influence the technology sector, such as space exploration. It represents a new leap forward to train the next generation of clinical and engineering visionaries as they advance health care.
F-MAT Family Medicine Accelerated Track
The Family Medicine Accelerated Track, or F-MAT, is an innovative 3-year accelerated medical school curriculum that culminates in the M.D. degree and will prepare participants for a standard 3-year family medicine curriculum at one of three Texas Tech programs, in Lubbock, Amarillo, or the Permian Basin.
The purpose of F-MAT is two-fold:
- To increase the number of medical students choosing a career in family medicine, especially in underserved areas, who will provide patient-centered care.
- To prepare primary care physicians more efficiently and with less cost.
For complete information on the program, visit TTUHSC SOM website.
JD/MD Dual Degree Program
The Doctor of Jurisprudence / Doctor of Medicine Dual Degree Program is administered by Texas Tech University School of Law and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine. The JD/MD program is designed specifically for individuals interested in the areas of health law, healthcare policy, bioterrorism, forensics, or biomedical compliance.
For complete information on the program, visit TTUHSC SOM website.
MD/MBA Dual Degree Program
The health care system is changing rapidly. Managed care and other reforms have created a need for physicians with a greater knowledge of business.
In this joint degree program, the student will receive both MD and MBA degrees within the four years of medical school.
MD/MBE
Medical technology design and development today require a global perspective to engineer medical solutions that are cost-effective, sustainable and accessible. The MBE in Global Medical Innovation (GMI) prepares students to work and innovate in this dynamic international landscape with experiential learning and robust entrepreneurial opportunities.
MD/MPH Dual Degree Program
Pursuing a Master of Public Health enables you to approach complex issues from a population perspective, using evidence-based solutions to improve health outcomes for communities and individuals.
The MPH is especially important for doctors working internationally, with marginalized and rural populations, as well as those considering a career as a health authority. A Masters in Public Health equips professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to better serve their patients by understanding the public health aspects of health, including social, community, organizational and policy change.
MD/MS in Biomedical Informatics
The UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) offers a Dual Degree program for students aiming to be both physicians and informaticians. Through this unique program, students earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) also study at SBMI and earn a Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics during their four years of medical school.
SBMI collaborates with two different UT System medical schools to offer the dual degree:
MD/PhD & DO/PhD Dual Degree Programs
The UT System, Texas Tech University HSC and Texas A&M University Medical Schools and UNT Health Science Center-TCOM along with their Graduate schools offer combined MD/PhD or DO/PhD Programs. The Combined Degree Program is a 6-8 year course of study designed specifically to meet the training needs of individuals dedicated to a career in biomedical research. Successful applicants should have significant research experiences prior to application to the program.
Applicants to the joint MD/PhD program at University of Texas Southwestern, UT Medical Branch at Galveston, UT HSC at Houston, UT Health at San Antonio Long School of Medicine, and Texas A&M University College of Medicine must complete the AMCAS application as the primary application and pay the required application fee to AMCAS.
Those joint degree applicants who also want to be considered for the MD only program at the above schools must submit a TMDSAS application in addition to the AMCAS application as applicants cannot apply to the MD only program through AMCAS.
Applicants to the DO/PhD at UNTHSC -TCOM and MD/PhD at Texas Tech HSC SOM at Lubbock need ONLY to select the appropriate program on the TMDSAS application.
Additional application procedures are required when applying to the combined programs as one is applying to two different entities, the medical school and the graduate school.
Most of the programs require that information be sent directly to the respective graduate office in addition to submitting the medical school application to TMDSAS. Marking the MD/PhD and/or DO/PhD boxes on the application simply alerts the graduate schools to your interest in applying to the combined programs, so please follow the instructions for each school indicated below.
Also, keep in mind that application to the MD/PhD and/or DO/PhD Programs will require an additional interview. While the schools try to complete both interviews on the same day, it may be necessary to schedule the graduate school interview on the day before or after your medical school interview.
Listed below are the schools that offer MD/PhD or DO/PhD programs. Click on the school link to obtain the contact person, mailing address and additional application requirements for the graduate school at each institution.
